The Province of Bari

This territory is characterized by the Murges, the highlands embraced by the Sea. In this territory the different dominations over time are in evidence: Roman, Byzantine, Norman, Aragonese and Angioine. But what characterizes this territory more, is the presence of the Romanesque Apulian cathedrals and the castles built by Fredrick II. In Bari one finds splendid examples of both: the Basilica of St. Nicola and the Castle. It is also worth the trip to admire the cathedrals of Bitonto, Ruvo and Conversano. The enchanting sceneries of the Adriatic Coast and the ancient medieval towns face out on a blue and rich sea of treasures: Molfetta, with the cathedral of the Madonna of the Assumption, Giovinazzo, where it is possible to visit the suggestive Dolmen of S.Silvestro, Polignano a Mare, defined by tourists from all over the world as the "Pearl of the Adriatic" for its beautiful beaches and its romantic alleys to gaze out on the sea, Monopoli with a splendid ancient city centre still encircled by the old city walls and a castle that makes this city one of the most beautiful places in all of Apulia. Travelling south we discover another wonder: the trullis of Alberobello, declared by Unesco a patrimony of humanity, they offer the tourist the possibility to relive ancient atmospheres; the Caves of Castellana, are the greatest and most beautiful of Europe, they leave spellbound even the most travelled visitors; and then Locorotondo, the important center of the Valle d'Itria, whose name expresses its particularity. Moreover, the territory is dotted with ancient farms that testify to the strong agricultural history of this land. If one walks among the Murges one sees green hills scattered with rocks and small parcels of land bordered by low stone walls that still today confine the sheep, horses and cows to their pastures. Among the cities not to be missed is Altamura with its characteristic "claustri" (small squares), Gravina di Puglia characterized by the presence of the great ravine found in the ancient part of the city in which the antique populations took refuge in centuries past, Gioia del Colle and Acquaviva delle Fonti.
