Imperial Apulia

The Province of Barletta, Andria, Trani is recent and includes territories belonging to the province of Bari and Foggia. Here the influence of Fredrick II is so strong that the tourist district is known as Imperial Apulia. And in fact it is here, near Andria, where one finds Castel del Monte, the most beautiful and mysterious castle that Fredrick II built. The castle towers over the Murgia and has been declared a patrimony of humanity by Unesco. A visit to this splendid castle during one's trip to Apulia is mandatory. The octagon form of the building recalls symbolic aspects that make the visit all the more interesting. The castles of Barletta and Trani are also characteristic and worth a visit. Barletta is where the famous Challenge of February 13th, 1503 took place, in which 13 Italian riders lead by Ettore Fieramosca challenged 13 French riders lead by Guy de you Motte to duel. One should also visit the Cathedral which is rich with history. It was built on a pre-roman hypogeum, and then during the 6th C a church was constructed in the basilica paleocristiana plan, and finally it was re-built during the High Middles Ages (11thC). The Cathedral of Trani represents a splendid example of the Apulian Romanesque style. Trani is a beautiful and charming city. It is a perfect place to stroll in the evening along the streets that look out over the port. The streetlamps bath the area in a soft light which offers a suggestive panorama.
This territory also guards a jewel forgotten by the national archaeology. Here one finds Canosa di Puglia, (in Latin, Canusium) that at the time of the Romans dominated the whole region. Innumerable finds testify to the ancient wealth of this city; however some of the excavations and monuments have not always been valued as they deserve to be. The city offers different itineraries through which one can read its secular history: early Christian, dauno, imperial Roman, Byzantine. In each of them hidden treasures of incomparable beauty and historical value have been discovered. Between Canosa and Barletta there is Canne della Battaglia where the famous battle between the Romans and Hannibal occurred in 216 BCE.
Finally at Margherita di Savoia it is possible to admire the greatest salt flats in Europe and to enjoy one of the three thermal centres in the region.
