Between the Sea and Safari
For a lover of the sea, the
Natural Park of the Coastal Dunes, Torre Canne and Torre San Leonardo are musts. The area includes a low and sandy coastline characterized by adjoining swampy areas, and sand banks. This area has been awarded Two
Blue Flags which indicates the cleanliness of the beach and water. The first one was awarded to
Carovigno which has a shore of around 14 kilometres characterized by a predominantly rocky area and by a continuous flow of inlets and
small sandy coves. For the lovers of comfort one can easily find
beach equipment and for the tourists looking for isolated places there are many
little coves reachable only by boat.
Not to be missed is the area of
Torre Guaceto, that extends from Carovigno to Brindisi, a place in which the natural beauty of the flora and fauna make it an unforgettable site.
Ostuni has a beautiful coastline that extends 17 kilometres and its beaches are alternated by dunes and vegetation particular to this area of the Mediterranean. One finds also sandy coves separated by rocky coasts. The sandy dunes of the
Pilone Beach are covered with centuries-old junipers and nearby one can visit Torre San Leonardo. At
Villanova, a town of ancient origins, there is a small port that welcomes the boats of the fishermen and the recreation crafts alike.
The Merlata Coast has a particularly interesting aspect in that the coastline is jagged, and enriched with many inlets and small coves where it is possible to enjoy hours of tranquillity.
Saint Lucia is characterized by a string of small inlets protected by the natural formation of rock-cliffs that characterize a wild and uncontaminated nature.
Under water expeditions are highly recommended in this area.
For naturalists and birdwatchers, the
Parco delle Saline di Punta della Contessa that includes swampy zones and tidal basins, fed by waters coming from the hinterland.
Beautiful walks are always a favourite pastime in the
Wood of Saint Teresa and Lucci, and the
Wood of Cerano, and along the
delta of the Giancola Channel.
At
Fasano one can visit the largest
Zoo-safari of Italy, in whose protected environment there are around 1,000 animals representing 40 different kinds of species.
