The Earth of the Messapis
This is the home of the Messapis, an ancient population that dominated this region together with the Daunis and the Japigis between the IX and the VII sec. BCE.
Brindisi has always represented the door to the east since the Romans navigated the Mediterranean. Both
the Appian Way and Trajan's Way terminate in the city of Brindisi and the Roman domination can still be seen in the
column that marks the end of the Appian Way. Two castles to be visited are the
Aragonese Castle and the Great Castle of Fredrick II. The Cathedral is also worth a visit with its splendid square, and the
Church of Saint Maria del Casale is nearby. The treasures of this territory are innumerable. First and foremost is
Ostuni, the "white city", or "the city of the olives" or "the city of nativity scenes". The
old city centre is a must to visit, it is called "the Earth", to distinguish it from the more recent part of the city called "the Marina". The city is filled with ancient buildings plastered in white mortar built one on top of the other and in the centre one finds the
Cathedral towers. From Ostuni, a short trip takes the visitor to
Oria where it is possible to experience history with the famous
historical re-enactments that occur every year at the beginning of August and attract thousands of tourists from the whole world over. The stately
Svevian Castle dominates the city. One should also visit the
Castle of Mesagne, located in the heart of the city along with her Mother Church. Looking out on the Valle d'Itria there is finally
Cisternino a treasure chest of history and culture set among olive trees, trulli and vineyards. The other place of interest is the
Sanctuary of the Madonna d'Iberna.
