The sea and Nature
The
ravines, which preserve the secrets of this stone age culture, are the main interests of this area; they consist of deep karstic gorges created by the unceasing action of coursing water which start from the headlands of the Murge and flow to the sea.
Ancient man lived in the caves from the Neolithic Age, and they were heavily used during the Middle Ages. There thermal properties and microclimate made them a particularly comfortable habitat.
These suggestive rocky villages are situated in the cities which form the
Natural Regional Park of TERRA DELLE GRAVINE: Ginosa, Mottola, Grottaglie, Crispiano, Laterza, Statte, Castellaneta, Massafra, Palagianello.
MOTTOLA and MASSAFRA are the best examples of the rocky pictorial art, where it's possible to admire the typical architecture of sacred places, directly excavated into the rock.
Inside of the
RISERVA STATALE STORNARA you can walk in a wood of Aleppo's pines, a typical Mediterranean conifer able to resist to high temperatures and drought.
The strong scent of the trees and the chirp of the cicadas characterize these pine woods.
The name of STORNARA comes from
STORNI (STARLINGS), which populate this land during the winter. If you like bird-watching you should visit the
swamp called LA VELA (THE SAIL).
MARINA DI GINOSA has been rewarded with the "blue flag" to confirm that the sea (here) is spectacular and clean.
There are many seaside tourist resorts along the coast of TARANTO and they offer every kind of service. Some important places are:
Marina di Pulsano, Campomarino, Torre Ovo, Leporano, Castellaneta Marina e San Pietro in Bevagna.
